Using AASL Best Websites for Teaching and Learning in Today's Library
Today's librarian is constantly looking for new ideas, keeping up with new trends, and making way for new technology. When it comes to professional development, new websites, and online tools for peer teachers and students, the best place to start is with the American Association of School Librarians Best Websites for Teaching and Learning. This committee was given the charge eight years ago to create an annual list of sites to aid librarians and their peer instructors in the areas of instruction and learning. In this half-day pre-conference session participants will learn about the American Association of School Librarians Best Websites for Teaching and Learning. A selection of sites from the past eight years will be shared with attendees, from there participants will come together to create ideas in how sites can be used in classrooms, libraries and professional development. At the end of the pre-conference session all ideas will be gathered and curated into one online tool for sharing and easy access.

The Art of Storytelling
Oral storytelling is an art that originated in Africa. Earliest forms of storytelling shed light into the culture, the mannerism, the beliefs, and the people of that time period. In this workshop, attendees will witness the power of storytelling and three ways to make a story more effective. One way is to be creative. The second way is to use different methods to share stories. The third way is to use old concepts, personal history, and everyday people in stories. Not only will attendees see examples of books from and by an African American author, they will learn how creativity and using different methods of storytelling can bridge the gap of racism, sexism, and low self-esteem. The presenter will share how she uses the Art of Storytelling to breed in culture, manners, and beliefs with vivid description.

Tell Your Story through Graphic Illustrations
Presenters will describe their 2016 Will Eisner Innovation Grant Award winning program for Birchwood School at the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice in collaboration with the School of Library and Information Science at USC. Students wrote and story boarded the text for a graphic novel based on their gang experiences and knowledge. The grant funded an illustrator for the graphic novel that was then marketed to publishers as an anti-gang tool. Beginner Research project
During the 2015-2016 school year I began to teach beginner research skills to 1st graders using the highlighting method. Each student finished their research with a tote bag project that had their learned facts on one side and a drawn picture on the other. I will share with attendees the way I taught this and give out information on how they can bring beginner research projects to their schools.

What Does a Makerspace Look Like?: A Visual Journey
After four years of research in library makerspaces one thing is clear, no maker learning space is the same as another. Some are fixed in a library space, others are mobile. Some have an artistic theme, and others have a STEM or technology brand. One visited makerspace was integral to an entire high school, while many others were just getting started. Through photos, librarian, student, and educator interviews, as well as researcher journaling, this presentation will focus on the variety of opportunities offered by makerspaces in libraries around the world as well as the challenges, successes, and practicalities that librarians face when offering these services in their libraries. School, public, and academic library makerspaces will be included in this session with a special emphasis on their integration, curricula, and projects.

“Genrefying”: The Good, the Bad and the GREAT
I would like to discuss why librarians should consider “genrefying” their school library and the benefits that I have found from going ahead with this process. Since I have “genrefyed” I was able to do a heavy weed of my fiction, I am able to see immediately which genres need updating and which are the most popular, students are able to browse by their interest instead of wandering the shelves and I can answer the question, “Where are the _________ books?” with a point.  I would also like to discuss the nitty gritty of “genrefying” and go step by step through the process that I came up with.  This would include what was difficult, the problems I had, what I would do differently and how I put it all together.

Ditch the Reading Logs -- Redefine Self Selected Reading!
After watching my own daughter struggle with the "read 20 minutes a night" concept, and conferencing with middle school students, I began to wonder if our way of holding students accountable for their reading outside of school could use redefinition. Students often said the temptation to "just write some pages down" was too great, even for the best students. And watching my daughter focus on the clock rather on than the text, I decided to try a different approach. In this session learn about an Independent Reading Guide approach and how it can be a powerful literacy tool.
